CTE Changed My Life!
BY: JAMESON OSMOND, DECA STATE PRESIDENT
When I started high school I was too shy to even attempt anything out of my comfort zone, but I always had an interest in business, so I signed up for a CTE marketing class. The things I learned completely shifted what I wanted to become in life, and gave me focused business experience that I could not have gotten anywhere else. The class was taught by one of my most influential teachers, who saw my desire for the business program, and persuaded me to join DECA. The program’s mission statement says that DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, and this could not be any truer for me.
I was amazed at how easily I began to learn valuable skills in everything from communicating ideas to starting my own business. I am now the state president of DECA and have taken almost all of the business courses offered. I try to apply the knowledge I have learned as the DECA president in my state, by participating in marketing and promotional activities like the DECA International Career Development Conference. At the conference, hosted in Salt Lake City, I was able to meet with local senators, CTE administrators, and influential businesspeople throughout Utah. None of this could have been possible without CTE and DECA.
I wish all students would take advantage of these amazing programs. They will prepare students for any challenge, any desire, and any goal they want to achieve. ASPIREHIGHER!
