HAPPY CTE MONTH!

February Is National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. What is CTE? Career and Technical Education is all about assisting today’s students in the exploration of and preparation for tomorrow’s careers.

Utah students typically participate in their first CTE course in middle school – “CTE-Intro.”  This introductory class helps thousands of students across the state learn more about Career Pathways in eight Areas of Study. (Check them out at www.UtahCTE.org.) More importantly, CTE-Intro students learn about themselves so they can better design a plan for educational and career success. Here’s what one such middle school student had to say about his experience in CTE-Intro this year:

… [most recently] we have been learning about bridges and how they work – specifically how to design and build a strong bridge. We built scale bridges of our own design on the computer using AutoCAD, then tested them to see how much weight they would hold. I made my bridge out of balsa wood. It never crushed because the crusher only goes to 1000 pounds so far. We have also learned a lot about AutoCAD, which helped us make the bridges on a template, but can be applied to a bunch of other projects. So far, the tech part is my favorite in CTE-Intro. I have had a great experience and love my tech class!
